What is drug addiction?
Drug use takes place on a spectrum that ranges from experimental dabbling to an overwhelming addiction.
- Experimental Use – The drug is used only
a few times, just to try it out.
- Recreational/Social Use – Use of the drug
is infrequent and limited to social interactions. The probability of negative
consequences is small.
- Binge Use/Abuse – Use of the drug is more
frequent and often characterized by indulging in large amounts in a short
period of time or by continued use in spite of prominent negative consequences.
- Addiction – The drug is used to feel “normal,”
and more of it is needed to feel high. Users who try to stop abusing the drug
often fail and/or experience physical withdrawal symptoms.
Addiction is characterized by a loss of control over drug use and a physical dependence on the drug. Addiction is very difficult to overcome alone. However, resources are available for those in need.

What is treatment?
The treatment process is designed to reduce or eliminate the use of alcohol and drugs. It also works to resolve physical, psychological, and social problems associated with the uncontrollable use of alcohol or other drugs. Treatment focuses on developing sufficient skills and abilities that will allow people to make healthy choices in their lives.
There are different ways that people have successfully stopped using drugs. This site does not endorse any particular model of treatment but offers information to increase knowledge about the options available. This report by the Department of Health and Human Services gives an overview of different models of treatment.
What happens in treatment?
Although most people are familiar with the idea of treatment, few understand what actually happens in the treatment process. By educating people on the process, this site hopes to remove some of the fear and encourage people to take advantage of this opportunity to get help. What is recovery?
Once an addict stops using alcohol and other drugs, many say that they are in "recovery" from their addiction. This means they are in the process of changing their life from one filled with drug-related turmoil and challenges to one of health and positive choices.
